Եւ ո՛չ ինչ լուաւ Դեմետր. զի անկեալ կործանեալ էր Նիկանովր գնդաւն իւրով ՛ի նոցանէ պատերազմաւ: Եւ նա դարձեալ անդրէն կրկնեալ յղեա՛ց զԲաքիդ եւ զՅակիմոս, եւ զյառաջակողմն թեւոյն իւրոյ ընդ նոսա յերկրի՛ն Հրէաստանի[210]:

1. And Demetrius heard that Nicanor was fallen with his forces in battle, and he sent Bacchides and Alcimus again into the land of Judah a second time, and the right wing with them:
9:1 Furthermore, when Demetrius heard the Nicanor and his host were slain in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judea the second time, and with them the chief strength of his host:
9:2
Եւ գնացին ՛ի ճանապարհն Գաղգաղայ. եւ եկին ճակատեցան ՛ի Մեսաղովթ յերկիրն Արբեղացւոց, եւ առին զնա, եւ սատակեցին անձինս բազումս մարդկան ՛ի նմա:

2. and they went by the way that leadeth to Gilgal, and encamped against Mesaloth, which is in Arbela, and gat possession of it, and destroyed much people.
9:2 Who went forth by the way that leadeth to Galgala, and pitched their tents before Masaloth, which is in Arbela, and after they had won it, they slew much people:

3. And the first month of the hundred and fifty and second year they encamped against Jerusalem:

4. and they removed, and went to Berea, with twenty thousand footmen and two thousand horse.

5. And Judas was encamped at Elasa, and three thousand chosen men with him:

իբրեւ տեսին զամբոխ բազմութեան գնդին, եւ երկեան յոյժ, եւ բազումք թօթափեցան ՛ի նմանէ. եւ ո՛չոք մնաց առ Յուդայի, բայց ութ հարիւր հեծեալ սպառազէն:

6. and they saw the multitude of the forces, that they were many, and they feared exceedingly: and many slipped away out of the army; there were not left of them more than eight hundred men.
9:6 Who seeing the multitude of the other army to he so great were sore afraid; whereupon many conveyed themselves out of the host, insomuch as abode of them no more but eight hundred men:
9:7
Իբրեւ ետես Յուդա թէ թօթափեցան զօրքն ՛ի նմանէ, եւ պատերազմ նեղէ՛ր զնա, նեղեցաւ ՛ի սիրտ իւր. զի ո՛չ էր ժամանօղ միւսանգամ ժողովե՛լ զնոսա. լուծաւ լքաւ անկաւ[212]:

7. And Judas saw that his army slipped away, and that the battle pressed upon him, and he was sore troubled in heart, for that he had no time to gather them together, and he waxed faint.
9:7 When Judas therefore saw that his host slipt away, and that the battle pressed upon him, he was sore troubled in mind, and much distressed, for that he had no time to gather them together:
9:8
Սկսա՛ւ խօսել ընդ մնացեալսն եւ ասէ. Եկա՛յք հարցուք ՛ի դիմի, թերեւս կարասցուք կծանե՛լ ինչ ՛ի նոցանէ[213]:

8. And he said to them that were left, Let us arise and go up against our adversaries, if peradventure we may be able to fight with them.
9:8 Nevertheless unto them that remained he said, Let us arise and go up against our enemies, if peradventure we may be able to fight with them:
9:9
Եւ ինքն յարձակ յարձա՛կ խաղայր. եւ զօրքն մատուցեալ պաշարէին դարձուցանել անդրէն. սկսան խօսել ընդ նմա` եւ ասեն. Ա՛յր դու` նոցա ինչ մեք ո՛չ կարեմք ստնանել. բայց այժմ զանձն ապրեցուցանել ո՛ւշ դիցուք. հապա դարձցուք ժողովեսցուք զեղբարս մեր. ապա մարտիցուք. թէպէտ եւ իցեմք սակաւք[214]:

9. And they would have dissuaded him, saying, We shall in no wise be able: but let us rather save our lives now: let us return again, and our brethren, and fight against them: but we are few.
9:9 But they dehorted him, saying, We shall never be able: let us now rather save our lives, and hereafter we will return with our brethren, and fight against them: for we are but few:
9:10
Պատասխանի ետ նոցա Յուդա` եւ ասէ. Քա՛ւ լիցի ինձ առնել զիրսդ զայդ, ՛ի փախո՛ւստ դառնալ ինձ ՛ի նոցանէ. եթէ հասեալ իցէ ժամանակ մեր` մեռցո՛ւք քաջութեամբ ՛ի վերայ եղբարց մերոց, եւ ո՛չ խառնեսցուք զանուն վատութեան մերոյ ընդ արւութիւնս քաջութեան[215]:

10. And Judas said, let it not be so that I should do this thing, to flee from them: and if our time is come, let us die manfully for our brethren’s sake, and not leave a cause of reproach against our glory.
9:10 Then Judas said, God forbid that I should do this thing, and flee away from them: if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren, and let us not stain our honour:
9:11
Եւ ելին զօրքն յիւրաքանչիւր բանակէ, եւ ճակատեցան դէմ յանդիման միմեանց. երկո՛ւ գունդք լինէին` գունդքն Բաքիդեան սպառազինաւ: Պարսաւորքն եւ աղեղնաւորքն առաջի գնդին խաղային, եւ նահատակքն յառաջագոյն խաղացեալ էին[216]:

11. And the host removed from the camp, and stood to encounter them, and the horse was parted into two companies, and the slingers and the archers went before the host, and all the mighty men that fought in the front of the battle.
9:11 With that the host of Bacchides removed out of their tents, and stood over against them, their horsemen being divided into two troops, and their slingers and archers going before the host and they that marched in the foreward were all mighty men:

Բայց Բաքիդ յաջո՛ւմ թեւի անդ ճեպէր զզօրսն ՛ի ձայն փողոյ տագնապաւ յառաջ մատուցանէր[217]:

12. But Bacchides was in the right wing; and the phalanx drew near on the two parts, and they blew with their trumpets.
9:12 As for Bacchides, he was in the right wing: so the host drew near on the two parts, and sounded their trumpets:

Եւ գունդն Յուդայեան փո՛ղ հարեալ ՛ի վերայ յարձակեալ գային, մինչեւ երկիրն շարժէր յամբոխ յաղաղակէ անտի յերկոցունց կողմանց: Եւ եղեւ պատերազմն խառնեալ անդադար, յառաւօտէ մինչեւ յերեկոյ:

9:13
13. And the men of Judas’ side, even they sounded with their trumpets, and the earth shook with the shout of the armies, and the battle was joined, and continued from morning until evening.
9:13 They also of Judas' side, even they sounded their trumpets also, so that the earth shook at the noise of the armies, and the battle continued from morning till night:
9:14
Իբրեւ ետես Յուդա` եթէ Բաքիդդ ընտիր ընտիր զօրօք յաջում թեւի ա՛նդ է, զընտիր ընտիր սպառազինաց յիւրմէ գնդէ անտի յառաջ կոչէր, քաջալերէր եւ անդէն ՛ի վերայ յարձակէր[218]:

14. And Judas saw that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right side, and there went with him all that were brave in heart,
9:14 Now when Judas perceived that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right side, he took with him all the hardy men:
9:15
՛Ի նմին ժամանակի զաջակողմն թեւին բեկանէր, եւ զձախուն արկանէր. եւ անդստին առաջի արկեալ փախստեա՛յս տանէր մինչեւ ՛ի կողմանս վերինս Հազովտայ[219]:

15. and the right wing was discomfited by them, and he pursued after them unto the mount Azotus.
9:15 Who discomfited the right wing, and pursued them unto the mount Azotus:
9:16
Եւ որ ՛ի ձախակողմն թեւի ա՛նդ էին, իբրեւ տեսին թէ աջակողմն թեւին բեկաւ առաջի Յուդայեանց, գային խառնէին, եւ զՅուդայ գնդաւն հանդերձ ՛ի մէ՛ջ արկանէին:

9:16
16. And they that were on the left wing saw that the right wing was discomfited, and they turned and followed upon the footsteps of Judas and of those that were with him:
9:16 But when they of the left wing saw that they of the right wing were discomfited, they followed upon Judas and those that were with him hard at the heels from behind:
9:17
Յայնմ վայրի վիրաւորք յերկուց կողմանց անկեալ ընդ երկիր թաւալէին[220]:

9:17
17. and the battle waxed sore, and many on both parts fell wounded to death.
9:17 Whereupon there was a sore battle, insomuch as many were slain on both parts:
9:18
Ա՛նդ անկանէր Յուդա` առաջին նահատակօքն. եւ որ մնացեալ էին ՛ի փախուստ դառնային[221]:

18. And Judas fell, and the rest fled.
9:18 Judas also was killed, and the remnant fled:

Դարձա՛ն Յովնաթան եւ Շմաւոն եղբարքն երկոքին, բարձին զՅուդա, տարան թաղեցին ՛ի շիրիմս հարց իւրեանց ՛ի Մովդիիմ:

19. And Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of his fathers at Modin.
9:19 THen Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of his fathers in Modin:

Լացին կոծեցան որդիքն Իսրայէլի կո՛ծ մեծ. սո՛ւգ առին աւուրս բազումս, եւ սկսան խօսել:

20. And they bewailed him, and all Israel made great lamentation for him, and mourned many days, and said,

եւ ասեն. Զիա՜րդ անկաւ կործանեցաւ հզօրն փրկիչն Իսրայէլի:

21. How is the mighty fallen, the saviour of Israel!

Այլ ուրեք ուրեք մարտ` կամ ճակատ` կամ մղել պատերազմի, կամ քաջութիւնս ինչ որ արարեա՛լ է Յուդայի` գրեցաւ իսկ ո՛չ յայսմ մատենի. զի բազո՛ւմ էր կարի յոյժ[222]:

9:22
22. And the rest of the acts of Judas, and his wars, and the valiant deeds which he did, and his greatness, they are not written; for they were exceeding many.
9:22 As for the other things concerning Judas and his wars, and the noble acts which he did, and his greatness, they are not written: for they were very many:
9:23
Եւ եղեւ յետ մահուանն Յուդայի` բրեցին անօրէնքն շուրջ զսահմանօքն Իսրայէլացւոց, բուսան` բղխեցին, եւ բազմացա՛ն որ գործէին զանօրէնութիւն[223]:

23. And it came to pass after the death of Judas, that the lawless put forth their heads in all the coasts of Israel, and all they that wrought iniquity rose up
9:23 Now after the death of Judas the wicked began to put forth their heads in all the coasts of Israel, and there arose up all such as wrought iniquity:
9:24
Յաւուրսն յայնոսիկ եղեւ սո՛վ մեծ, եւ ինքնակամ գնացին մարդիկն ՛ի նոսա. եւ աշխարհն ձեռնտու էր ՛ի նոսա:

24. (in those days there was an exceeding great famine), and the country went over with them.
9:24 In those days also was there a very great famine, by reason whereof the country revolted, and went with them:
9:25
Եւ ընտրեաց Բաքիդդ արս անօրէնս, եւ կացոյց իբրեւ տեարս ՛ի վերայ նոցա:

9:25
25. And Bacchides chose out the ungodly men, and made them lords of the country.
9:25 Then Bacchides chose the wicked men, and made them lords of the country:

որ քննէին եւ խնդրէին եւ ածէին զբարեկամսն Յուդայի առ Բաքիդդ, եւ խնդրէին վրէժ ՛ի նոցանէ, տառապեցուցանէին եւ ա՛յպն առնէին:

26. And they sought out and searched for the friends of Judas, and brought them unto Bacchides, and he took vengeance on them, and used them despitefully.
9:26 And they made enquiry and search for Judas' friends, and brought them unto Bacchides, who took vengeance of them, and used them despitefully:
9:27
եւ նեղէին եւ ծաղր առնէին զԻսրայէլ. զի ո՛չ երբէք լեա՛լ էր այս յորմէ հետէ երեւեցաւ մարգարէ:

27. And there was great tribulation in Israel, such as was not since the time that no prophet appeared unto them.
9:27 So was there a great affliction in Israel, the like whereof was not since the time that a prophet was not seen among them:

Եւ ժողովեցան ամենայն բարեկամքն Յուդայի, եւ չոգան առ Յովնաթան Ափուս` եւ ասեն:

28. And all the friends of Judas were gathered together, and they said unto Jonathan,
9:28 For this cause all Judas' friends came together, and said unto Jonathan:

Եղբայր քո Յուդա մեռա՛ւ, եւ այր չի՛ք որ նմա՛ն է նմա ելանել ընդդէմ թշնամւոյ, տա՛լ պատասխանի այդոցիկ որ եկեալ թշնամութեամբ նեղեն զազգս մեր:

29. Since thy brother Judas hath died, we have no man like him to go forth against our enemies and Bacchides, and among them of our nation that hate us.
9:29 Since thy brother Judas died, we have no man like him to go forth against our enemies, and Bacchides, and against them of our nation that are adversaries to us:

Այլ զքե՛զ ընտրեցաք մեք ՛ի տեղի նորա, զի եղիցես դու իշխան ՛ի վերայ մեր. լինել մեզ առաջնո՛րդ` եւ տա՛լ պատերազմ ընդ թշնամիս մեր[224]:

30. Now therefore we have chosen thee this day to be our prince and leader in his stead, that thou mayest fight our battles.

Եւ յա՛նձն առ Յովնաթան ՛ի ժամանակին յայնմիկ զառաջնորդութիւն. եւ համբարձաւ նա փոխանակ Յուդայի եղբօր իւրոյ:

31. And Jonathan took the governance upon him at that time, and rose up in the stead of his brother Judas.
9:31 Upon this Jonathan took the governance upon him at that time, and rose up instead of his brother Judas:

Իբրեւ գիտաց Բաքիդդ` խնդրէր սպանանել զՅովնաթան եւ զՇմաւոն զեղբայր նորա:

32. And Bacchides knew it, and he sought to slay him.
9:32 But when Bacchides gat knowledge thereof, he sought for to slay him:

եւ փախեան նոքա յանապատն Թակովեայ. եւ եկին բանակեցան ՛ի ջուր անդր Ակուսասփառ[225]:

33. And Jonathan, and Simon his brother, and all that were with him, knew it; and they fled into the wilderness of Tekoah, and encamped by the water of the pool Asphar.
9:33 Then Jonathan, and Simon his brother, and all that were with him, perceiving that, fled into the wilderness of Thecoe, and pitched their tents by the water of the pool Asphar:
9:34
Եւ գիտեաց Բաքիդ զօրն շաբաթուց, եւ եկն ինքն բանակեցաւ զօրօքն իւրովք յա՛յնկոյս Յորդանան գետոյ:

34. And Bacchides knew it on the sabbath day, and came, he and all his army, over Jordan.
9:34 Which when Bacchides understood, he came near to Jordan with all his host upon the sabbath day:

Եւ առաքեաց առ նոսա զեղբայր մի զիւր` զօրագլուխ զօրաց բազմաց, եւ աղաչեցին զՆաբատացիս զբարեկամս իւրեանց, յա՛նձն առնէին նոցա զկահ եւ զգրաստ` եւ զամենայն ինչս որ մնացեալ էր ՛ի բնի իւրեանց[226]:

35. And sent his brother, a leader of the multitude, and besought his friends the Nabathaeans, that they might leave with them their baggage, which was much.
9:35 Now Jonathan had sent his brother John, a captain of the people, to pray his friends the Nabathites, that they might leave with them their carriage, which was much:
9:36
Եւ ելին որդիքն Յամբրեայ որ ՛ի մէջ Դամասայն էին, ըմբռնեցին զՅոհաննէս, եւ առին գնացին կահիւ հանդերձ ընդ իւրեանցն:

36. And the children of Jambri came out of Medaba, and took John, and all that he had, and went their way with it.

37. But after these things they brought word to Jonathan and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri were making a great marriage, and were bringing the bride from Nadabath with a great train, a daughter of one of the great nobles of Canaan.
9:37 After this came word to Jonathan and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri made a great marriage, and were bringing the bride from Nadabatha with a great train, as being the daughter of one of the great princes of Chanaan:

Եւ յիշեցին նոքա զՅոհաննէս զեղբայրն իւրեանց. ելին մտին նոքա ՛ի դարան ՛ի ծործո՛ր լերինն:

38. And they remembered John their brother, and went up, and hid themselves under the covert of the mountain:

Եւ ամբարձին զաչս իւրեանց, տեսին զի գայր չո՛ւ մեծ` եւ ամբոխ բազում. եւ ե՛լ փեսայն փեսաւիրօքն եւ եղբարբքն հանդերձ, եւ փողովք եւ թմբկաւ, եւ պէսպէ՛ս արուեստականօք, եւ բազո՛ւմ վառելովք:

39. and they lifted up their eyes, and saw, and, behold, a great ado and much baggage: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends and his brethren, to meet them with timbrels, and minstrels, and many weapons.
9:39 Where they lifted up their eyes, and looked, and, behold, there was much ado and great carriage: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends and brethren, to meet them with drums, and instruments of musick, and many weapons:
9:40
Եւ ելին սոքա ՛ի դարանէ աստի, սպանին զբազումս, եւ բազում վիրաւորս արձակեցին, եւ զվառեալսն փախստեա՛յ արարին. եւ առին յաւարի զկահ եւ զհանդերձ. եւ զչուն աւա՛ր հարկանէին[228]:

40. And they rose up against them from their ambush, and slew them, and many fell wounded to death, and the remnant fled into the mountain, and they took all their spoils.
9:40 Then Jonathan and they that were with him rose up against them from the place where they lay in ambush, and made a slaughter of them in such sort, as many fell down dead, and the remnant fled into the mountain, and they took all their spoils:
9:41
Եւ դարձան հարսանիքն ՛ի կոծ, եւ ձայն արուեստականացն` ՛ի սուգ եւ յողբս դարձաւ[229]:

41. And the marriage was turned into mourning, and the voice of their minstrels into lamentation.
9:41 Thus was the marriage turned into mourning, and the noise of their melody into lamentation:

Եւ խնդրեցին սպառ սպուռ զվրէժ արեան եղբօրն իւրեանց. եւ դարձան ՛ի մա՛րգն Յորդանան գետոյ:

42. And they avenged fully the blood of their brother, and turned back to the marsh of Jordan
9:42 So when they had avenged fully the blood of their brother, they turned again to the marsh of Jordan:
9:43
Իբրեւ գիտաց Բաքիդդ` ա՛ռ զօրս եւ խաղաց ՛ի վերայ նոցա, եւ եկն եհաս յանձաւսն Յորդանան գետոյ[230]:

43. And Bacchides heard it, and he came on the sabbath day unto the banks of Jordan with a great host.
9:43 Now when Bacchides heard hereof, he came on the sabbath day unto the banks of Jordan with a great power:

Ասէ Յովնաթան ցզօրսն իւր. Եկայք յարիցուք մա՛րտ դիցուք վասն ոգւոց մերոց. զի ո՛չ է այսօր իբրեւ զերեկն եւ իբրեւ զեռանտն[231]:

44. And Jonathan said to his company, Let us stand up now and fight for our lives, for it is not to-day, as yesterday and the day before.
9:44 Then Jonathan said to his company, Let us go up now and fight for our lives, for it standeth not with us to day, as in time past:
9:45
Եւ ահաւասիկ զօրք ճակատեալ յանդիման մեր. ո՛չ ամուր թաքստի` ո՛չ դաշտ փախստի. եւ գետս Յորդանան շուրջ զմեւք պատեալ է[232]:

45. For, behold, the battle is before us and behind us; moreover the water of the Jordan is on this side and on that side, and marsh and wood; and there is no place to turn aside.
9:45 For, behold, the battle is before us and behind us, and the water of Jordan on this side and that side, the marsh likewise and wood, neither is there place for us to turn aside:

Արդ եկա՛յք ձայն բարձցուք յերկինս, յարձակեսցո՛ւք ՛ի վերայ, թերեւս ապրեսջիք ՛ի ձեռաց թշնամեաց մերոց: Զբանսն ասաց, եւ անդէն խառնեցաւ յարձակեցաւ ՛ի վերայ Բաքիդեայ[233]:

46. Now therefore cry unto heaven, that ye may be delivered out of the hand of your enemies.
9:46 Wherefore cry ye now unto heaven, that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies:

Ա՛յն ինչ լինէր զոգիսն ՛ի գիրկս իւր թափել, եւ նա յե՛տս կոյս կործանեցաւ:

47. And the battle was joined, and Jonathan stretched forth his hand to smite Bacchides, and he turned away back from him.
9:47 With that they joined battle, and Jonathan stretched forth his hand to smite Bacchides, but he turned back from him:

եւ հոսեցան Յովնաթան եւ որ ընդ նմա էին ՛ի դարէ՛ անտի[234]:

48. And Jonathan and they that were with him leapt into the Jordan, and swam over to the other side: and they did not pass over Jordan against them.

49. And there fell of Bacchides’ company that day about a thousand men;

50. and he returned to Jerusalem. And they builded strong cities in Judaea, the stronghold that was in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Bethhoron, and Bethel, and Timnath, Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.
9:50 Afterward returned Bacchides to Jerusalem and repaired the strong cites in Judea; the fort in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Bethhoron, and Bethel, and Thamnatha, Pharathoni, and Taphon, these did he strengthen with high walls, with gates and with bars:

72. And he restored unto him the captives which he had taken aforetime out of the land of Judah, and he returned and departed into his own land, and came not any more into their borders.
