38:1

38:1
1. Honour a physician according to thy need with the honours due unto him: For verily the Lord hath created him.
38:1 Honour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him: for the Lord hath created him:
38:2

38:2
2. For from the Most High cometh healing; And from the king he shall receive a gift.
38:2 For of the most High cometh healing, and he shall receive honour of the king. KJV [3] The skill of the physician shall lift up his head: and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration. KJV [4] The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them. KJV [5] Was not the water made sweet with wood, that the virtue thereof might be known? KJV [6] And he hath given men skill, that he might be honoured in his marvellous works. KJV [7] With such doth he heal [men,] and taketh away their pains. KJV [8] Of such doth the apothecary make a confection; and of his works there is no end; and from him is peace over all the earth, KJV [9] My son, in thy sickness be not negligent: but pray unto the Lord, and he will make thee whole. KJV [10] Leave off from sin, and order thine hands aright, and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness. KJV [11] Give a sweet savour, and a memorial of fine flour; and make a fat offering, as not being. KJV [12] Then give place to the physician, for the Lord hath created him: let him not go from thee, for thou hast need of him:
38:15

38:15
3. The skill of the physician shall lift up his head; And in the sight of great men he shall be admired.
38:15 There is a time when in their hands there is good success:
38:14

38:14
4. The Lord created medicines out of the earth; And a prudent man will have no disgust at them.
38:14 For they shall also pray unto the Lord, that he would prosper that, which they give for ease and remedy to prolong life. KJV [15] He that sinneth before his Maker, let him fall into the hand of the physician:
38:16

38:16
5. Was not water made sweet with wood, That the virtue thereof might be known?
38:16 My son, let tears fall down over the dead, and begin to lament, as if thou hadst suffered great harm thyself; and then cover his body according to the custom, and neglect not his burial. KJV [17] Weep bitterly, and make great moan:
38:18

38:18
6. And he gave men skill, That they might be glorified in his marvellous works.
38:18 and use lamentation, as he is worthy, and that a day or two, lest thou be evil spoken of: and then comfort thyself for thy heaviness:
38:19

38:19
7. With them doth he heal And taketh away his pain.
38:19 For of heaviness cometh death, and the heaviness of the heart breaketh strength. KJV [19] In affliction also sorrow remaineth: and the life of the poor is the curse of the heart:
38:21

38:21
8. With these will the apothecary make a confection; And his works shall not be brought to an end; And from him is peace upon the face of the earth.
38:21 Take no heaviness to heart: drive it away, and member the last end:
38:22

38:22
9. My son, in thy sickness be not negligent; But pray unto the Lord, and he shall heal thee.
38:22 Forget it not, for there is no turning again: thou shalt not do him good, but hurt thyself:
38:23

38:23
10. Put away wrong doing, and order thine hands aright, And cleanse thy heart from all manner of sin.
38:23 Remember my judgment: for thine also shall be so; yesterday for me, and to day for thee:
38:24

38:24
11. Give a sweet savour, and a memorial of fine flour; And make fat thine offering, as one that is not.
38:24 When the dead is at rest, let his remembrance rest; and be comforted for him, when his Spirit is departed from him. KJV [24] The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure: and he that hath little business shall become wise:
38:26

38:26
12. Then give place to the physician, for verily the Lord hath created him; And let him not go from thee, for thou hast need of him.
38:26 How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plough, and that glorieth in the goad, that driveth oxen, and is occupied in their labours, and whose talk is of bullocks:
38:27

38:27
13. There is a time when in their very hands is the issue for good.
38:27 He giveth his mind to make furrows; and is diligent to give the kine fodder:
38:28

38:28
14. For they also shall beseech the Lord, That he may prosper them in relief and in healing for the maintenance of life.
38:28 So every carpenter and workmaster, that laboureth night and day: and they that cut and grave seals, and are diligent to make great variety, and give themselves to counterfeit imagery, and watch to finish a work:
38:29

38:29
15. He that sinneth before his Maker, Let him fall into the hands of the physician.
38:29 The smith also sitting by the anvil, and considering the iron work, the vapour of the fire wasteth his flesh:
38:30

38:30
16. My son, let thy tears fall over the dead, And as one that suffereth grievously begin lamentation; And wind up his body according to his due, And neglect not his burial.
38:30 and he fighteth with the heat of the furnace: the noise of the hammer and the anvil is ever in his ears, and his eyes look still upon the pattern of the thing that he maketh:
38:31

38:31
17. Make bitter weeping, and make passionate wailing, And let thy mourning be according to his desert, For one day or two, lest thou be evil spoken of: And so be comforted for thy sorrow.
38:31 he setteth his mind to finish his work, and watcheth to polish it perfectly:
38:32

38:32
18. For of sorrow cometh death, And sorrow of heart will bow down the strength.
38:32 So doth the potter sitting at his work, and turning the wheel about with his feet, who is alway carefully set at his work, and maketh all his work by number; KJV [30] He fashioneth the clay with his arm, and boweth down his strength before his feet:
38:34

38:34
19. In calamity sorrow also remaineth: And the poor man’s life is grievous to the heart.
38:34 he applieth himself to lead it over; and he is diligent to make clean the furnace:
38:35

38:35
20. Give not thy heart unto sorrow: Put it away, remembering the last end:
38:35 All these trust to their hands: and every one is wise in his work:
38:36

38:36
21. Forget it not, for there is no returning again: Him thou shalt not profit, and thou wilt hurt thyself.
38:36 Without these cannot a city be inhabited: and they shall not dwell where they will, nor go up and down: KJV [33] They shall not be sought for in publick counsel, nor sit high in the congregation:
38:37

38:37
22. Remember the sentence upon him; for so also shall thine be; Yesterday for me, and today for thee.
38:37 they shall not sit on the judges' seat, nor understand the sentence of judgment:
38:38

38:38
23. When the dead is at rest, let his remembrance rest; And be comforted for him, when his spirit departeth from him.
38:38 they cannot declare justice and judgment; and they shall not be found where parables are spoken:
38:39

38:39
24. The wisdom of the scribe cometh by opportunity of leisure; And he that hath little business shall become wise.
38:39 But they will maintain the state of the world, and [all] their desire is in the work of their craft:
